A Closer Look at Week 30

Week 30 marks an important transition in blood cell production. Until now, the spleen and liver have been responsible for producing red blood cells, but this week the bone marrow fully takes over this function — a role it will continue to perform for the rest of your baby's life. This shift frees up the liver and spleen to focus on their other metabolic and immune functions.

The brain continues to grow rapidly, with the previously smooth surface developing increasingly complex grooves and indentations (sulci and gyri). These folds dramatically increase the surface area of the brain's outer layer (the cortex), allowing more neurons and synaptic connections to form. Your baby's brain is now sophisticated enough to regulate some body functions and is beginning to control basic reflexes.

Mood swings may return in the third trimester, driven by a combination of hormonal shifts, physical discomfort, disrupted sleep, and the emotional weight of impending parenthood. Feelings of anxiety about labour, finances, or readiness for a baby are all completely normal. If you find that anxiety or low mood is persistent, overwhelming, or interfering with daily life, speak with your healthcare provider — prenatal depression and anxiety are treatable, and support is available.

This is a practical time to start assembling your hospital bag. While you still have ten weeks to go, having the essentials packed and ready removes a source of stress as the due date approaches. Consider packing comfortable clothing, toiletries, phone chargers, snacks, an outfit for the baby to wear home, car seat documentation, and any specific items that bring you comfort — a favourite pillow, a playlist, or a photo.
