How Does the AI Baby Portrait Generator Work?
Everything you need to know about turning your ultrasound into a lifelike portrait — the technology, the accuracy, and the results.
What Is a FirstGlimpse AI Portrait?
A FirstGlimpse AI Portrait is a hyper-realistic, photographic-style image of what your baby is predicted to look like — generated directly from your ultrasound scan using advanced artificial intelligence. The technology analyses the three-dimensional structure of your baby's face captured in the sound-wave data of your scan, then renders that structure with realistic skin texture, lighting, and detail.
The result is not a generic baby picked from a database. It is a portrait built around the specific geometry of your baby's face — the curve of their nose, the shape of their forehead, the fullness of their cheeks — personalised further with your choice of skin tone and ethnicity.
Which Ultrasound Scans Work Best?
The generator accepts any standard ultrasound image — 2D or 3D — but the quality of your portrait is directly tied to the quality of the scan input. Here's a quick guide:
- 3D or 4D scans (26–32 weeks): Best results. The face is fully formed with subcutaneous fat deposits, giving the characteristic newborn roundness. These scans capture three-dimensional surface geometry that gives the AI the richest structural data to work from.
- 3D scans (12–20 weeks): Very good results. The face is fully structured but leaner-looking than at birth, as fat hasn't yet accumulated. The AI portrait will look closer to a 2–3 month old than a newborn.
- 2D scans with a clear facial view: Good results if the face is clearly visible in the scan frame. Cross-sectional slices without a facial view are harder to work with.
- Very early scans (under 10 weeks): Limited results, as the facial features are not yet individually distinguishable at this stage. The AI will render a plausible newborn portrait but with less correlation to your specific baby's features.
Is the Portrait Accurate?
The AI portrait is a prediction, not a photograph. Think of it the way you might think of a forensic artist's reconstruction — it uses the best available structural evidence to produce the most plausible result, but it cannot guarantee a perfect likeness to your baby on the day of birth.
That said, the structural features captured in your ultrasound — the nose shape, forehead contour, jaw line — form the scaffold the AI paints over. If your ultrasound clearly shows a button nose, the portrait will reflect that. The aspects the AI generates independently (skin texture, eyelash detail, ambient lighting) are areas where real variability exists.
Many parents report being struck by how closely the portrait resembles their actual newborn. Many others notice differences and enjoy the comparison. Both experiences are perfectly normal, and both are part of the fun.
How Does Skin Tone Personalisation Work?
When you select parent skin tones using our colour-swatch picker, our system extracts the hex colour values of your selections and mathematically blends them — calculating a weighted average across the RGB colour channels — to produce a target skin tone for your baby that represents a genetic combination of both parents.
This specific blended hex colour is then embedded directly into the AI generation prompt, giving the model a precise target to match rather than a generic ethnic description. The result is a personalised skin tone that reflects the real gamut of your family's heritage, rather than a stereotyped guess.
If parent skin tones are not provided, the generator defaults to using your selected ethnicity as a reference point, calibrated with specific colour values for each ethnic background from our research into typical skin tone ranges across populations.
Will My Scan Be Stored or Shared?
No. Your ultrasound is uploaded to a temporary, encrypted processing storage bucket (operated by Replicate, a secure AI infrastructure provider). It is used solely for the generation of your portrait and is not stored permanently on any server, not used to train AI models, and not shared with any third party. The processing URL expires shortly after your session ends.
We are acutely aware that ultrasound scans are sensitive medical data connected to your pregnancy. We treat them accordingly.
What Is the "Fix Anatomy" Mode?
AI generation from ultrasound input can sometimes produce anatomical quirks — a slightly misshapen head, hands appearing in front of the face (a very common issue since babies love to rest their hands on their cheeks in the womb), or cord artefacts in the frame. The Fix Anatomy mode applies a second-pass generation with a higher creative override strength and specific corrective prompting designed to address these issues. It will:
- Clear obstructions from the face (hands, cord)
- Round and normalise head shape
- Add a soft knitted bonnet to frame the face naturally
- Apply stronger anatomical correction guidance
Use Fix Anatomy as a second pass if your first result has any of these issues. It takes the same amount of time as the initial generation.
Is This Tool Safe During Pregnancy?
Absolutely. FirstGlimpse AI is a software tool that processes images you upload. It does not produce or use any radiation, sound waves, or physical equipment. You simply upload an existing ultrasound image file, and our AI processes it. There is no physical component to this tool and no interaction with your body or your pregnancy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 2D scan from my NHS/Medicare appointment?
Yes. 2D scans can work well, particularly if the face is clearly visible in the frame. A profile view with a clear nose and forehead outline gives the AI good structural landmarks to work from.
How long does generation take?
Generation typically takes between 60 and 120 seconds. The AI model runs on GPU cloud infrastructure, and processing time can vary slightly depending on server load.
My result doesn't look right — what can I do?
Try the Fix Anatomy button first. If the image quality of your upload is low (blurry, low-resolution, or taken on a phone camera of a printed image), the result will reflect the limitations of the source. For best results, use a digital export file from your scan studio, not a phone photo of the screen.
Does the portrait show the baby's gender?
No. The portrait generates a photorealistic baby face, but the AI does not attempt to predict or display the baby's sex. For gender prediction, visit our Gender Prediction Tools including Ramzi Theory, Nub Theory, and the Chinese Gender Chart.
Can I download the image?
Yes! After generation, you'll see a preview of your portrait. To download the full high-resolution, watermark-free image, simply complete a secure checkout to unlock your download instantly.
Is this a medical tool?
No. FirstGlimpse AI portraits are produced for entertainment and emotional bonding purposes only. They are not diagnostic tools, they do not reveal medical information about your baby's health, and they should never replace advice from a qualified medical professional or certified sonographer.
