Genetics 101

Will They Have Your Eyes?

A simple guide to dominant and recessive traits, and why genetics is a roll of the dice.

Dominant vs. Recessive Traits

We all have two copies of every gene—one from mom, one from dad. Some genes are "bossy" (dominant) and always show up if present. Others are "shy" (recessive) and only show up if you have two copies of them.

D

Dominant Traits

Brown eyes, curly hair, dimples, freckles, detached earlobes.

r

Recessive Traits

Blue eyes, straight hair, no dimples, attached earlobes, red hair.

The Eye Color Myth

You might have learned in school that Brown (B) dominates Blue (b). While mostly true, it's actually more complex!

  • Two Brown-Eyed Parents: Can still have a blue-eyed baby if they both carry the hidden 'b' gene (25% chance!).
  • Two Blue-Eyed Parents: Almost always have blue-eyed children, since they have no dominant 'B' gene to pass on. (Though rare green/hazel exceptions exist!)
  • Green Eyes: The wildcard! It involves multiple genes and isn't a simple dominant/recessive switch.

Hair Texture & Color

Hair is polygenic (controlled by many genes). This is why hair color comes in so many shades, not just "dark" or "light."

Curly vs. Straight: Curly hair is generally dominant. However, many people have "wavy" hair, which is a mix (incomplete dominance).

What About Height?

Height is one of the most complex traits, influenced by over 700 gene variants! While tall parents tend to have tall kids, nutrition and environment play a huge role.

Quick Estimation Formula:

(Dad's Height + Mom's Height) / 2
+ 2.5 inches for a boy
- 2.5 inches for a girl

⚠ It's Just Probability!

Genetics is full of surprises. Even with a 99% chance of brown eyes, nature finds a way to throw a curveball. That's the beauty of creating a unique new human!
