A Closer Look at Week 36

Week 36 often brings a physical shift known as 'lightening' or 'dropping' — the moment when your baby descends lower into the pelvis and engages their head in the pelvic brim in preparation for birth. For first-time mothers, this typically happens two to four weeks before delivery; for subsequent pregnancies, it may not occur until labour begins. You may notice that breathing becomes easier as the pressure on your diaphragm is relieved, but pelvic pressure and the need to urinate increase.

Your baby is now shedding the last remnants of the lanugo (fine downy hair) and the vernix caseosa (waxy coating) that have protected the skin throughout pregnancy. Both of these substances are swallowed by the baby and contribute to the meconium that accumulates in the intestines. The skin is now smooth, plump, and pink, ready for life outside the womb.

Most babies have settled into a head-down (cephalic) position by this point. If your baby is still in a breech (feet-first) or transverse (sideways) position, your healthcare provider may discuss options for encouraging them to turn, such as the External Cephalic Version (ECV), a procedure in which a doctor manually guides the baby into the correct position through the abdomen.

This is the week to ensure your hospital bag is packed and ready to go. Essential items include your birth plan, ID and insurance documents, comfortable clothing for labour and recovery, toiletries, nursing bras, pads, phone charger, snacks for during and after labour, and a going-home outfit for you and your baby. Having everything prepared reduces last-minute stress and ensures you can focus on the experience when the time comes.
