A Closer Look at Week 31

At 31 weeks, all five of your baby's senses are now operational. They can see (light and shadows filtering through the womb), hear (your voice, music, and ambient sounds), taste (the flavours in amniotic fluid), smell (studies suggest newborns recognise the scent of amniotic fluid), and feel (touch, pressure, and temperature). This multi-sensory awareness means your baby is constantly processing information from their environment, building neural pathways that will serve them from the moment of birth.

Your baby can now track a source of light by turning their head, a sign that the visual processing centres of the brain are functioning and coordinating with the muscles of the neck. Pupil dilation and constriction in response to light are also working, though full visual acuity will not develop until months after birth.

Leaking colostrum from the breasts is a common and perfectly normal occurrence in the third trimester. Colostrum is a thick, yellowish fluid that is rich in antibodies, protein, and nutrients — it is often called 'liquid gold' because of its extraordinary nutritional value. It will be your baby's first food in the hours and days after birth, providing essential immune protection while your mature breast milk comes in. Not all women experience leaking, and the presence or absence of colostrum does not indicate anything about your ability to breastfeed.

Breast pads (disposable or reusable) worn inside your bra can help manage any leaking and prevent visible wet patches on clothing. If you plan to breastfeed, this is a good time to research breastfeeding positions, latch techniques, and local lactation support groups. Many hospitals and community centres offer free breastfeeding classes that can help you feel prepared and confident.
