A Closer Look at Week 8

Week 8 marks a significant transition in your pregnancy. Your baby is now officially called a fetus — no longer an embryo — and is about the size of a raspberry. Though tiny, an incredible amount of development is happening beneath the surface. The small tail that was present in earlier weeks is almost entirely gone, and the body is beginning to straighten out and take on a more recognisable human shape.

The most exciting development this week is the formation of fingers and toes. They are still webbed, like a frog's, but the individual digits are beginning to separate. Simultaneously, nerve cells in the brain are forming complex networks, branching out and connecting to create the foundations of your baby's nervous system. The upper lip and the tip of the nose are becoming visible on ultrasound.

For many expectant mothers, week 8 is when morning sickness hits its stride. Despite the misleading name, nausea can strike at any time of day and is caused by rapidly rising levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Eating small, bland meals throughout the day — crackers, toast, ginger tea — can help manage symptoms. Fatigue is also very common; your body is working overtime to build the placenta, which acts as your baby's life support system.

If you haven't already, now is a great time to schedule your first prenatal appointment. Your healthcare provider will confirm the pregnancy, estimate your due date, run initial blood tests, and discuss your medical history. You may also have your first ultrasound, which can be an incredibly emotional moment — hearing your baby's heartbeat for the first time.
